Saturday, October 14th at 11:30 am, join Madison County Historian Matthew Urtz on a walking tour of historic Canastota in partnership with the Canastota Canal Museum, Canastota Public Library and the Preservation Association of Central NY. Learn about the storied history of the community through its historic structures as Urtz explores the changes that shaped Canastota throughout its existence, including the impact of the Erie Canal on its social and architectural fabric and a series of fires that forever changed the built landscape of the village.
The tour will conclude near the award winning Erie Canal Brewing Company, where guests are welcome to join Urtz following the event for a brief Q&A. (Note: drinks and food are not included in the admission cost.) The tour will meet at 122 Canal Street and will run rain or shine. If severe weather prevents the tour on Saturday, an email will be sent out the morning of, and a backup date of Sunday, October 15th at 11:30 am has been confirmed. The walk is approximately .5 miles and will take around 90-minutes. Comfortable walking shoes and an umbrella are recommended. Due to limited space on this tour, reservations are recommended. Tickets for members of either PACNY or the Canastota Canal Town Museum are free and $12 for the general public. A link will be posted shortly to reserve or purchase tickets. All proceeds will benefit the Canastota Canal Town Museum, Canastota Public Library and the Preservation Association of CNY.
